thats how it is

Stan knew something was up with Sam. Maybe.

1. Sam hadn't asked him if he wanted anything to drink. Sam was the master of letting him take anything from the fridge.

2. He was just not being Sam.

"Is Michelle, OK?" Stan asked. The TV wasn't on. Not even a video game was static in the background.

"Yeah, she's...great." Sam nodded as if he were lost in his own livingroom. Stan went to find them drinks.

"Are you sure?" Stan stared at Sam wondering what it could be. Something was off.

Sam hugged himself tight. "OK, there are 2 things I want to tell you."

"Fine." Stan opened a can of pop. "And then we can play Zombieland?"

Sam nodded. It looked as if Sam were ill to tell him.

"I saw Tony." Sam winced and plopped to the couch, grabbing the remote. It was as if he didn't want to say a thing. "Tony thinks he's might be in love with you."

"Wonder what world he's living in?" Stan took it in stride and sat next to Sam, but not too close.

"I know..its crazy..and then..then he comes by the Cupcake to tell Michelle that Caddie's having a baby." Sam shrugged as if he might be telling him all this in his sleep. "Can you believe that?"

"I dunno." Stan wasn't going to make much of it. Maybe it was true. Even so, he felt sorry for the kid. Caddie was one who had her own way of thinking of others. Sometimes, you had no idea she was even doing it. "Hopefully, she's changed."

a friend indeed

Michelle was in a sweat. It was cool out, but inside it was as if the heater kicked in, already. Of course, she wasn't going to ask what was happening at THE CUPCAKE. The customers seemed satisfied. But she was a little warm.

"What could that mean?" Lux was being mysterious, eyeing Michelle who was at her post, the cash registor while Lux got the sweets and drinks for the customers. "Got a bun in the oven?" Lux smirked back at Michelle.

Of course, Michelle ignored her. She hugged herself tight. It was hard to smile now. She was sure she'd get reprimanded that she wasn't nice enough to the customers.

"Just kidding." Lux teased. "That would never happen." Lux twisted and turned about. Michelle wasn't sure what Lux was getting at. It was quiet then. Not a soul looking for a cupcake or a frozen drink. Lux slipped up next to Michelle then. "Look, I'm going to start babysitting at night." She didn't sound thrilled. "You could come over and cheer me on. You know, where you tell the kid that I am the best. Shit like that."

"Well, lets hope you won't be saying that word." Michelle reminded her.

"Oh. No. Of course not." Lux winced, shaking her head. "Its just we need the extra cash."

Michelle nodded as if she understood.

Finally, the door jingled. A customer. Only it was Tony. Lux looked at Michelle. They both grimaced. But Lux stepped up took his order as if he were a stranger. At least, he wasn't offering her how she could do her job better or how was Stan. He wanted a brownie and a black coffee.

Michelle rang him up. He gave her the cash and she gave him back change.

"I dunno if you know, or not." He looked her in the eye. Michelle only gritted thinking that smart mouth of his would say something detrimental, but he didn't. "Caddie's gonna have a baby."

"She is?" Michelle winced.

"You didn't know?" His gaze was serious.

"I haven't spoken to her, in like forever." She festered back.

"I just-" He shrugged, but didn't even finish his sentence. It was as if he knew, they were done, he wouldn't try  again to even speak to her.

"And you weren't even that mean to him." Lux came up from behind and whispered in her ear.  Michelle looked back at her. "Hey, we should go thrifting when we get out of here." Lux decided instantly.

"I dunno. I really shouldn't." Michelle shook her head.

"Oh, come on." Lux tugged at her free arm. "Look, I gotta an extra 20. Lets see if we can find two outfit on that."

"No way." Michelle cracked up. This was not exactly Good Will hunting. Not around here. These places were vintage and that meant money, but Michelle was willing to see if it could happen

growing pains

Lux couldn't say bringing Stan home had changed anything. She knew what her Mom was thinking. Just think of who you could be with now. Maybe even married. She didn't say it. Her Mom did bring up college. Why wasn't she more serious about finding a career? Helping herself?

Maybe Lux was her own worst enemy. Lux knew this. She wanted to change. She did. And maybe she was..all thanks to Stan.

"You should fight for a better schedule." She told him the next day when he was getting ready for work at 3 in the afternoon. He probably wouldn't be home til 3 in the morning.

"Yeah, and lose my job." Stan slightly smirked as he buttoned up in his uniform.

"How long have you been there?" It felt as if lately, she didn't see him at proper hours. Sure, she sleep odd hours, and be awake as soon as he got home. She didn't want to tell him he was ruining her beauty sleep. How on earth  was she suppose to manage college too? With this kind of arrangement.

"I dunno. Maybe a year." Stan shrugged.

"Then you should have a say." Lux knew she would demand it. Of course, she didn't want to get him fired, either.

"I'm fine at the moment." Stan informed her. "But I'll start looking. Looking for another job, if that would help."

"What? Another job? On top of this one?" Was he mad? She put her arms around him. "Don't you dare." She hugged him tight. She supposed she could look after the little brat, two doors down. His Mom was a nurse. And the pay would be good. She'd only have to see to him until midnight.
